Lignite, North Dakota was founded in 1907. It got its name from the coal mined in the area. It is a friendly community where you can experience the four seasons, all with beautiful sunrises and sunsets, and clean, fresh air. We are located 7 miles South of the Canadian Border in Vale Township, Burke County. Residents are mainly of Scandinavian and Northern European decent. Many of the community earn their living in the agriculture and petroleum industry along with the Bureau of Customs and Border Protection. Lignite is proud to be the first town in North Dakota to have an Oil Well drilled within the City Limits. The City is governed by a City Council form of Government: Mayor, Auditor, and four Council Members. We have an elected City Park Board. We have a Consolidated School District, being joined by Portal (7 miles North) Flaxton (9 miles East) and Columbus (11 miles West) The atmosphere is friendly, accommodates our needs and is a safe place for all of us and our families, which makes us very grateful to the community. If you have a house or lot (in the Lignite area) to sell or rent be sure to contact me and I will add it to the Real Estate page FOR FREE!
There is Real Estate for sale or rent.
